Take a good look at the picture. What would you call that? Not ice cream, but the other word. Got it in your head? Okay, now read on.
Because of my journalist/teacher background, I tend to be a stickler for spelling and pronunciation perfection. If I read a word and don't know how to say it, it haunts me until I figure it out. Or if I hear a word and can't figure out exactly how to spell it, I go crazy until I find the answer. So I am, you might say, CURSED to no end. Especially if someone around me makes what I would consider a silly mistake, I have to really bite my tongue so as to not appear like the snotty girl in the class. (i.e. - DUH everyone knows how to spell RECEIVE - "I before e except after c." It's easy!) Poor Jon has to put up with me a lot. And poor me has to put up with Jon! (I know... that wasn't grammatically correct.)
So, here is the next debate I place before you. Is this delicious frozen delicacy SHERBET or SHERBERT? I must say I was apalled that Jon and I disagree to the bitter end on this one! I'll bet you can guess who says what. Please help me win this battle!

SHERBERT, duh.
We avoid this fight by avoiding the substance (sherbet, by the way) altogether. Instead we're snobs and only indulge in sorbet. Makes for a stronger marriage that way.
Sherbet (but I'm pretty sure sherbert is correct)
Oh, and how about orangutan...everyone says orangutang.
oh my gosh good point Heather! That one bothers me! And realtor or realator. Grrr...
NO!
It's sherbet! There is no R!!! I hate that, I always have. Whenever people asked people to dances and used the (If I were Ernie and you were Bert.. I would say Sherbert.. or surebert.. or whatever ridiculousness. (also not a word)
NO!.. no. (i'm on your side with this.)
Sorry to break it to you Jon... but as a SHERBET connoisseur, I've got to be the one to tell you that you're sadly mistaken! :o) I've got your back on this one Bon!
Ha! You are just like me! And I was going to suggest that you just buy Sorbet from now on to make things simple. I was tempted to look this up, but off the top of my head, it's spelled Sherbet and should be pronounced Sherbet, but people say Sherbert because it's simpler for the brain to want to say the "er" sound twice. Am I right? (PS--I think I say sherbert accidentally--you know, all 3 times I say that word each year.)
There is no "R" in sherbet!! End of story!
I say both! Don't want to leave anyone out.
sherbet. I am excited to see who wins!
The wealthy pronounce it "sorbe". Don't ask me how I know since I am not wealthy. J/K.
I have not heard anyone call that either in a long time. We call it sorbet here on the east coast!
