The Great Debate

VH1 has started doing a series called "The Great Debate" in which they vote on silly pop culture things, then comedians comment on them. It kept me entertained through 4 flights in two days with an infant. I even laughed out loud a couple of times, then realized that I was on an airplane and getting weird looks from my neighbors. So, I want to start doing it. I thought of lots of things I'd want to vote on, but forgot them all last night. So, here are just a couple. Leave your vote and, if you wish, witty comments so I can laugh aloud again!

#1 - Working out outside or in the gym?

#2 - If in the gym, elliptical or treadmill?

Let the debate begin!

Ooh. Ooh. Ok...

#1. Definitely working out outside. You have all the space in the world outside. If it's hot, you just need to get up ridiculously early in the morning light just before the sun comes up. That's such a gorgeous time of day anyway. If it's cold, you warm up pretty quickly once you're moving. I ran a half marathon in 20-degree weather. My feet were only frozen for the first 20 minutes. :) There is something very spiritual about using your body for good while also soaking up nature. You don't have to wait for a machine. You don't have to share anyone's sweat on a machine. Your body can provide tons of resistance (jumping, lunging, running, push-ups, etc) without the use of machines. Sure--use the gym on occasion but do the majority of your exercise outside. It is SO much more rewarding. Besides--you look a heck of a lot cooler running up a massive hill than pushing the incline button on a treadmill...

#2: I hate them both. But I prefer the treadmill because my feet go to sleep on an elliptical. And if you read #1 you'll know I'm not much of a gym-goer (yes, I have free access to one--I just prefer the outdoors), so I can't really compare the two. I just know I can run for hours outside, but my limit on a treadmill is 25 minutes. Seriously.

The Gym. Why? Becuause I don't like all the looks you get running outside. Okay it only happened once and it wasn't a look as much as a shout but it was just odd and unsettling, it might have been due to the green track pants?!.

In the gym I am sorrounded by old people who just don't care (love the rec center) what anyone else is doing or looks like. And that for one makes me feel better. When there I choose the elliptical becasue the treadmill has developed a stutter due to it's new belt. Or I just stick to the track.

This is fun, although you may regret asking!
#1-In the gym. Working outside is much more refreshing, but random people can see what you are doing, think you are dying, and just plain think you are crazy. There are also those who drive past you and feel guilty that they are NOT working out. Who wants to make others feel bad (although watching me run would not make anyone else feel bad, they would be too embarrassed to admit they saw me). In the gym everyone else there is as crazy or stupid as you are, the smell makes you feel like you smell good, and you can spend a ton of money just to feel worse about the fact that you aren’t reaching your goals (I would go for option #3, really..work out in your home—it affects no one else negatively especially if your kids are sleeping).
#2-Niether. If you are actually paying money to be in bodily pain (acupuncture may be more effective) at least play racquetball so that there is some sort of fun involved. The numbers on a treadmill never move fast enough and you feel like you are working awfully hard to get nowhere and the elliptical is just asking to cause joint problems and completely ruin your gait (or in my case cause your patellar tendonitis to flare up even worse than when running). Again you always have the problem of working really hard and getting nowhere.

Side note...I have never actually been in a gym in my life. I can't pay for it and definitely can't leave my kids to fend for themselves.

Gym/treadmill.
I don't even think you get a workout on the elliptical. I mean you never see Jillian Michaels yelling at people to "turn those legs faster" on the elliptical.
